Everyone knows how to pedal a bike don't they? You just stomp down on one of the pedals with one foot and let the other one rest as it comes up. Simple right? WRONG!!
Proper pedaling technique has to be practiced to be done properly. The motion is more like scraping mud off of ones shoes using a circular motion to apply even power. You apply pressure with one foot as you lift with the other foot. This means that equal force is applied to the pedals by both feet. That is why most riders use ether toe clips or clipless peddles on their bikes. This allows them to lift with one foot and transmit maximum power to the drive train. It also will allow you to go farther faster because you are much more efficient in the way you transfer your power to the bike.
