What is this site all about?
In the last few years in have put 15000 miles on my Trek 2120 bicycle and I would like to share some of the lessons I learned from those miles. I have been on the road in many different conditions such as driving rain with 50 mile an hour winds, or when the temperature has been below freezing. I have also been out on calm days when the temperature was over 100 degf. It was so hot the asphalt was literally sticking to my tires. This gives me a wide range of biking experiences that I hope will be beneficial to all.
One of the things I love about riding a bike is the feeling of being alive and in tune with the world when out on the open road. I get a great sense of satisfaction and accomplishment from moving from here, to there, under my own power.
The other reason I ride is for my health. Over my biking career I have lost 70 pounds and dramatically increased my overall health. It does not take special equipment to bike, just a bike, a riding regular schedule, and the determination to do it. One of the other great things about biking is the whole family cane enjoy the sport and everyone has a good time. I have seen many children and seniors ride in and complete Bike Across Kansas.
I love long distance tours and encourage everyone who likes to be outside to try one. Does it take training to ride on long tours? "You bet!" (Please see my Training schedule for those just starting out) On a long tour the miles and days just sort of blend together. You sleep, eat, ride, eat, sleep ride. 500 miles can fly under your wheels and the passage of time is only marked by the stops for the night. The mornings are beautiful and the sun sets stunning.
